flying tigers

Since 1972, the Toronto Flying Tigers have been dedicated to promoting a sense of community, camaraderie and athleticism in the Asian community through competitive outdoor volleyball. Over the past 38 years, our community group has grown to engage over 1700 members. Involving Asian athletes between the ages of 15 and 30 in the GTA, our men’s and women’s teams compete in a series of tournaments throughout the summer. The final event is the Annual North American Asian Invitational Volleyball Circuit, a 3-day tournament held over the Labour Day weekend and a cultural phenomenon since the late 1930s.

connex

The Club

The Toronto Connex Volleyball Club is one of the many clubs that participate in the NACIVT chinese volleyball circuit. The club consists of 2 men teams and 2 women teams. The club started sometime back in 1985 in New York, when a group of friends decided to put a team together and participate in this annual chinese volleyball tournament. It started off with only a team for each gender and in ’98 it evolved to 2 teams per gender.

Championships

Connex has won many tournaments and has actually made NACVIT volleyball history by having the most consecutive wins. The Men’s A team has won 10 championships in a row from the years 1996-2005 then again in 2008. The women won their first championship in 2005 and just won again this past year in 2009.

Ngunlam

NLV Team History
During the late 60’s and early 70’s, there were many immigrants who had come to Canada from China and its surrounding areas. Many of these immigrants came here in search of a better life.

It was with this immigrant experience that many friendships and bonds were forged. Later, these friends realized that they had something else in common: a common passion for volleyball. Thus it was in 1976 that the Ngun Lam Volleyball Association was founded. Ngun Lam found themselves “fishing” on the first day during the early years of its existence. It wasn’t until the year 1984 which marked the beginning of a great dynasty for Ngun Lam. “A-Long” (dragon) joined Ngun Lam that year and brought us to our first NACIVT championship in San Francisco. We also won it in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991. Thus making Ngun Lam the only team to win it 6 consecutive years to complete the NACIVT circuit and to win it a total of 7 times.

Although Ngun Lam has not won a NACIVT championship since 1991, we are no strangers to the winners circle. Through our dedication and hard work we have placed us 2nd and 3rd many times and finished no worse than 5th in subsequant NACIVT tournaments.

Toronto Phoenix Sports Club is a non-profit organization focused on low cost athletic opportunities for the youth of our community. By building Champions on and off the court, we are improving the health and wellness of all the participants and teaching life skills that only organized team sports can.

Ultimately, the organizational goal is to provide our program at zero cost to the players.

Who are we?

Toronto Phoenix Sports Club is a co-ed volleyball organization intent on Building Champions. As nice as on the court success is, our primary goal is to develop our members into Champions off the court and into their adult life.

We are a non-profit organization that began in 1995 as a team of friends who had the vision of making a volleyball club that was accessible to players of all ages and backgrounds. From that one team, the club has grown to 7 teams and 100 members from all over the GTA. Our youngest members are 13 years old and the majority of participants are high school and university students.

Building Future Champions is not easy. With the generous assistance of our volunterr coaches, we are able to make a difference in many of the players lives. Many of our members could not afford to play organized club volleyball, but we have given them the opporunity to participate at a very high level and at a minimal cost.

The teams participate in 4 tournaments throughout the summer, culminating at the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament, the National Championship, played in a different location in North America Every Year.
